โฆ Synopsis
The relationship between floatability and electrokinetic potential has been widely used, mainly for judging the behaviour of reagents 6,7 In this study, the electrokinetic . potential was obtained from the electrophoretic mobility of fine coal particles floating in a slurry with distilled water. The electrokinetic potential was negative, and increased from 36 to 48 mV when the swelling index decreased from 8 to 5. When creosote was added to the distilled water, higher electrokinetic potentials were obtained, but a similar increase was obtained with increasing oxidation of the coal.

Shpol'skii luminescence spectra in straight-chain-alkane matrices at 77 K have been measured from carbon-disulphide extracts of nine coal macerals and a cyclohexane extract of a coal-tar pitch. Several Canadian coals were analysed by FT-i.r. The technique is applicable to both the organic and inorganic part of the coal. The method by which the spectra can be subtracted one from the other, allows the distinguishing of one coal from another by characteristic functional groups. The high resol
Pyritic sulphur has effectively been removed from three coal samples by treating with a strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The acidophilic bacteria present in coals have also been found to efficiently leach pyrite from coal. Addition of an essential bacterial nutrient and a surfactant together wit
