โœฆ Synopsis

A method for the screening and isolation of antibacterial peptides from the extracellular insect cuticle using ultrafiltration and reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography is presented. Using this method we were able to conveniently isolate cuticular antibacterial peptides belonging to the cecropin family in 1 day. The procedure should facilitate the rapid screening of antibacterial peptides or other bioactive peptides from extracellular matrices. c. 1994 Academic Press, Inc.

The Manduca sexta Malpighian tubule assay system, developed to monitor adenylate cyclase activity, was used i n combination with HPLC to isolate a novel cAMP generating peptide from 350,000 whole flesh flies, Neobelfieria bullata. Mass spectrometry revealed a molecular mass of 5,047 daltons, and Edm
