✦ Synopsis

Abstract

A clonal isolate of an RNA‐containing sarcoma virus derived from a spontaneous woolly monkey fibrosarcoma has been obtained. The woolly sarcoma virus transformed cells do not spontaneously yield infectious virus but do contain the woolly gs antigen. The primate sarcoma virus can be rescued with comparable efficiency by superinfection with either murine or primate helper type‐C viruses. During rescue with murine helper type‐C virus, the intracellular level of woolly monkey gs antigen does not rise in proportion to the production of helper gs antigen, or in proportion to the production of transmissible focus‐forming virus. The results suggest that the mechanism of rescue may simply involve an assembly of sarcoma components into an infectious particle during the production of the helper type‐C virus.
