Kajima a big school construction contract. HERE mobilized recently naturalized Latino immigrants to vote for HERE'S candidate, who was advertised as the candidate more likely to support a pro-immigrant agenda. New school board member Gil Cedillo also opposes awarding the construction contract to Kajima.
The union also takes credit for persuading the board of the Japanese American National Museum not to give Kajima the contract for an expansion. The union conducted a letter-writing campaign by civil rights activists who said the museum should not hire Kajima because it was against human rights-as indicated by its use of Chinese slave laborers in World War 11.
By a vote of 196 to 185, the United Steelworkers recently won a representation election at Minnesota Valley Engineering, a cryogenic tank manufacturing plant in New Prague, Minnesota. Seven months earlier the union had lost an election at the same plant by 35 votes. After the loss, the union filed 24 unfair labor practice charges with the NLRB, and 23 of the charges were sustained. Rather than challenge the rulings in federal court, the employer agreed to the NLRB-imposed remedy of a second election.
A union organizer said that the biggest issue was worker justice and dignity, but wages and benefits, as well as pensions, were also important. A former plant worker who now works for Northwest Airlines as a welder and is represented by the International Association of Machinists, spoke to the employees on the values of union representation; his support was a big help, the organizer said. The Steelworkers and the Machinists have recently been cooperating in various organizing efforts.
