Inversion takes place both on opening and restoring an epithio ring, and likewise when halomercaptooctadecanoic acids are derived from hydroxymercaptostearic acids. No h a n g e in configuration occurs when an epoxy acid is converted into an epithio acid. A cis epoxy fatty acid can be converted into
