โฆ Synopsis
One-to-one complexes between Na, K and Cs atoms and Hz0 have been studied by using matrix IR spectroscopy. Perturbed water submolecule vibrations were observed in the bending and stretching regions for each complex. The perturbed stretching vibration is assigned to the totally symmetric stretching mode (vi) of the Hz0 submolecule in the complex based on isotopic shifts. In both regions, the shift is largest for the Li complex, and the shift decreases for the Na and K complexes but increases again for the Cs complex. The perturbed stretching mode is substantially intensified when compared to the perturbed bending mode. Intensification of the v, mode steadily increases down the alkali series and is explained by charge-transfer considerations.
