✦ Synopsis

1st Intern. Conf: on Bioinorganic Chemistry -Session B the 'Bz level with the 'E, levels which yields a triclinic electron distribution.

The 2E, levels admix to the 6Ar ground state by spin-orbit coupling. The electron distribution is therefore predominantly spherically symmetric with a small rhombic component C,,. Ferric low spin Fe in Mb(CN) has for Cd, symmetry a 2E ground state and low lying 'E2 and 4A2 levels at about 300 and 800 cm-'. A triclinic perturbation splits the 2E doublet into 2E+ and the new ground state 2E_. The electron distribution is therefore always of rhombic symmetry C2,.

It is intended to discuss also the symmetry properties of hemes and heme proteins for the 3d6 configuration of Fe.

## Abstract The role of ethoxylate‐containing molecules as ion‐selective electrode (ISE) type potentiometric sensors is illustrated by studies carried out in the author's laboratories [1]. The molecules discussed include long chain acyclic polyethoxylates, crown and bis‐crown ethers, diphenylethers
