✦ Synopsis

Abstract

The role of ethoxylate‐containing molecules as ion‐selective electrode (ISE) type potentiometric sensors is illustrated by studies carried out in the author's laboratories [1]. The molecules discussed include long chain acyclic polyethoxylates, crown and bis‐crown ethers, diphenylethers of tetraethyleneglycol and tripodal type receptors. Attention is given to performance of the ISEs for alkali and alkaline earth metal ions, uranyl and organic cations. Additionally, there is some discussion of fundamentals and of the role of electrodes with membranes based on appropriate tetraphenylborates of barium complexed with polyethoxylate in the analysis and critical micelle concentration determination of nonionic polyethoxylate detergents.

## Abstract New polymeric membrane cadmium‐ion selective sensors have been prepared by incorporating nitrogen and sulfur containing tridentate ligands as the ionophores into the plasticized PVC membranes. Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) based membranes of potassium hydrotris[__N__‐(2,6‐xylyl)thioimdazol
