โœฆ Synopsis

THE variation of the lattice parameters of austenite and martensite and the breadth of their X-ray diffraction lines have been investigated after subjecting the specimens to low temperature treatment. Two plain carbon steels were chosen containing (1) 0.89 per cent carbon and 0.24 per cent manganese, and (2) 1.21 per cent carbon and 0.25 per cent manganese. The samples were heated for 30 min at 930 ยฐ C in a carbon monoxide atmosphere and quenched in brine. Rods of 0.5 mm diameter were cut from the quenched specimen by cutting very slowly with a carborundum wheel, applying efficient water cooling. The rods were subsequently etched in order to remove the surface layer. In some cases the martensitic structure has been produced after preparing the rods.

The rods were immersed in liquid air for 2 hr and in liquid helium at about 1.5 ยฐ K for approximately 5-6 hr. After treatment in each liquefied gas, X-ray diffraction photographs were taken with both 9 cm and 19 cm Debye-Scherrer cameras using CoK~ radiation and an iron filter. For some purposes unfiltered radiation was used. The films were photometered by means of the Hilger non-recording X-ray microphotometer. Readings were taken at intervals of 0.1 mm along the entire length of the films. Correction

The influence of tempering temperature on the reversed austenite formation and tensile properties are investigated in Fe-13%Cr-4%Ni-Mo low carbon martensite stainless steel in the temperature range of 550-950 โ€ข C. It is found that at the temperatures below 680 โ€ข C, the reversed austenite formation o
