Investigation of a Twisted Phase between the Cholesteric and the Smectic A Phase
In a ternary mixture of two liquid crystals and a non-mesomorphic chiral dopant an intermediate state with an unusual texture was found between the cholcsteric and the SA phase which could be idcntified as a separatc twisted mesophase. The reflection wavelength of this mesophase docs not change with temperature whcreas the transmission of unpolarized light decreases from 50 to 20%.
The experimental findings point to the existence of a twisted grain boundary phase.
In einer ternaren Mischung zwcier Flussigkristallc mit einem nicht-mesogenen chiralen Dotierstoff wurde zwischeri der cholesterischen und der SA-Phase ein Zwischenzustand mit einer ungcwohnlichen Textur gcfunden, dcr als eigenstandige vcrdrilltc Mesophasc identifizicrt werden konnte. Die Reflexionswellenlange andcrt sich nicht mit der Tempcratur, wahrend die DurchlGsigkeit von unpolarisiertcm Licht von 50 auf 20% abnimmt. Die experimcntellen Befunde sprechen dafur, da6 eiric ,,twisted grain boundary"-Phase vorlicgt.
