✦ Synopsis

Internal frictions of several polycrystalline copper wires of various purities deformed at liquid nitrogen temperature and at room temperature were measured as a function of temperature between -190Β°C and + 20Β°C at about 1 c/s. There are three relaxation peaks in this temperature region and detailed studies wore made on the nature of one of the peaks, namely Pi, which appeared around -125Β°C.

A rather direct evidence for the mechanism that this peak P, is due to a combined effect of dislocations and point defects was obtained, i.e. the height of once appeared peak was drastically reduced by small amount of additional deformation.

It was found that the pre-annealing temperature of specimens has a great influence on the peak height of Pi. The effect of the mode of deformation on the peak height was also examined.

MAXIMA

$ Department of Metallurgy, University of Tokyo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo and the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo. 3 The high frequency measurements of these peaks in our laboratory were published in Refs. 1 and 2, while the low frequency ones were reported in Refs. 3 and 7. The similar peaks were also found by other investigators; see e.g. Refs. 4, 5 and 6.

These internal friction peaks occur at temperatures corresponding to the ductile to brittle transition of these materials in slow tension tests.
