In this paper the need for interfaces to numerical software is discussed. A brief outline of the development of scientific software is given and some ideas for an ideal systemthe problem-solving environmentare looked at. Finally, some of the work with which NAG Limited is involved, m the development of knowledge-based front-ends for existing numerical and statistical software, is described.
