โœฆ Synopsis

The benzyl radical was formed by the photolysis and r-irradiation of organic rigid matrices (hydrocarbons, 2methyltetrahydrofuran and ethanol) containing benzyl chloride, and its electronic spectra were examined by a fluorescence spectrometer.

It is shown that the spectra are modified by a chloride anion situated close to a benzyl radical. when it was formed through dissociative electron attachment to benzyl chloride in the non-polar matrix.
