A B S T R A C T An approximate flow stress model is proposed as a possible explanation of the variability observed for maximum load values of crack opening displacement (COD) and pseudo -J integral measurements in small specimens of fully ductile material. The model presented is limited to test piec

✦ Synopsis
The influence of a compliant loading system on the instability behaviour of fracture mechanical specimens has been the subject of several investigations (cf.
Emst et al. [1], Kaiser and Carlsson [2]
). Since all loading systems are more or less compliant and in some cases extra compliance is added to achieve experimental advantages, it is of interest to study how compliance affects the crack growth behaviour and in particular if and when the growth becomes unstable.
