✦ Synopsis

The influence of a compliant loading system on the instability behaviour of fracture mechanical specimens has been the subject of several investigations (cf.

Emst et al. [1], Kaiser and Carlsson [2]

). Since all loading systems are more or less compliant and in some cases extra compliance is added to achieve experimental advantages, it is of interest to study how compliance affects the crack growth behaviour and in particular if and when the growth becomes unstable.
