✦ Synopsis

We have re-examined the reactions of singlet methylene with cyclopropane and cyclobutane in an attempt to determine whether there was any evidence for the occurrence of an insertion pathway into the (strained) carbon-carbon bonds. No evidence was found for such a reaction and a limit could be set on the relative rates compared with insertion into the C-H bonds. The results do not support a recent theoretical calculation.
