✦ Synopsis


Chondrocytes in vivo show distinct characteristics related to their structure and function. These in- clude an extracellular accumulation of proteoglycans and a specific type of collagen characteristic of articular cartilage, designated as [c~,(11)]~. These substances constitute the major macromolecular components of the matrix of articular cartilage.

The potential for more detailed evaluation of biochemical characteristics of cartilage cells has been expanded recently by the development of systems for propagation of cartilage cells in culture (1-3). Application of the culture system to human articular cartilage cells gives promise of expanding significantly the range of investigation and degree of sophistication to be used in the study of various types of arthritis. The possible role of genetically determined alterations in cartilage metabolism as the prime cause of certain degenerative disorders of cartilage with a familial tendency thereby may be evaluated.
