✦ Synopsis

There is a considerable quantity of literature dealing with the innervation of the pia mater and pial vessels of the brFin, but little which deals with the innervation of the pia mater of the spinal cord. Stohr ('28), who gives the most recent account of observations in this field, credits Purkinje (1836) with the first observations of nerves upon the pia mater. Remak in 1841 and Riidinger in 1863 observed nerve fibers leaving the dorsal roots of the spinal nerves to supply the spinal pia mater, as well as fibers from the meningeal nerves and 'sympathetic' vascular plexuses. The accounts of these investigations have not been available for this study, but Stohr reports them as follows (p.
