โœฆ Synopsis

Innate immunity

Innate (or nonadaptive) immune responses to pathogens are less specific but no less important than classical T-cell and B-cell responses to pathogens. The key cellular players in the innate immune system are the macrophages and neutrophils which are the professional phagocytes. Other cell types notable for their role in innate immunity are the large granular lymphocytes, which include natural killer cells. In addition to phagocytosis and complement fixation innate immunity relies on the secretion of antimicrobial proteins such as lysozyme and defensins. Genetic diseases which result in a defective innate immune response include chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) and leukocyte adhesion deficiency (LAD).
