✦ Synopsis

The optical properties of wood-pile photonic band structure lattices are investigated using an efficient scattering matrix treatment. The calculations take into account the finite thickness of real structures, and the coupling between the internal and external electro-magnetic fields. Theoretical transmission spectra are found to agree well with experimental measurements which demonstrate the presence of a photonic band gap. Calculations of the total radiative loss rate for a source within the structure show that this gap is complete, extending across the entire Brillouin zone. The results quantify the way that the properties of real, finite thickness structures approach those of an ideal infinite lattice as the number of layers is increased.

In a three-level atom embedded in a photonic band gap structure, the spontaneous emission is studied both with and without rotating-wave approximation. The virtual-photon-localized field is found, which causes a greater population of the atom trapped in its upper states.
