β¦ Synopsis
Photodissociation spectra of (N,H,), clusters from the dimer to the hexamer have been measured near the monomer frequencies of the v,~ mode at 937 cm-' (NH2 wag) and the u5 mode at 1098 cm-' (N-N stretch). The clusters are size-selected by the combination of a scattering process with a He beam and a quadrupole mass spectrometer. Large blue-shifts and broad linewidths characterize each cluster spectrum for the NH, wagging mode. The spectrum of cold dimers shows two peaks at 979 and 985 cm-'. The trimer spectrum is again split into two parts centered around 991 and 1025.2 cm-'. This trend is continued for n=4, 5, and 6 for which two peaks are observed around 1025 and 1048 cm-'.

A continuous supersonic molecular beam of small methanol clusters is crossed by the radiation of a pulsed CO2 laser. Subsequent scattering by a secondary He beam disperses the cluster beam and allows the off-axis detection of selected cluster species, undisturbed by ionizer fragmentation artifacts.
