## It is shown that a high power infrared iaser can enhance a chemical reaction (by lowering the activation energy) even if the reactants are infrared izctive.

โฆ Synopsis
Infrared laser induced chemical reactions were investigated for a number of methyl halide systems with chlorine. All systems reacted only in an excited mode induced by ixxliation from 2 TEA CO;! laser. Successful induction of reactions 3t frequencies far removed from the methyl halide resonances indicates that Stark broadening pl3ys an important role in the absorption process. Comparisons are made to other systems in which dissociation or reaction has been induced in simitsr experiments.
