✦ Synopsis

Abstract

The influence of randomly varying birefringence on dark soliton transmission is investigated by numerical simulation. The results show that randomly varying birefringence leads to a soliton frequency shift, causes radiation waves, and disrupts the stability of dark soliton transmission. The splitting of a soliton pulse may appear because of the strong randomly varying birefringence. Nonlinear gain can be used to effectively suppress the influence. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A model of stochastic gain ¨ariation is built in a dark soliton-distributed amplification transmission system; the influence of stochastic gain ¨ariation on the system is studied. The results show that the combined role of stochastic gain ¨ariation and amplifier spontaneous emission noise increases
