β¦ Synopsis
Stress corrosion cracking in compositionally non-uniform systems is addressed. Of special interest is the preferred direction of crack propagation in stress-corroded weld metal. Solidified structures of a cast austenitic stainless steel designed to simulate a solidified weld structure were homogenized to various degrees which caused changes in their microcompositional profiles, resulting in subsequent changes in cracking susceptibility and rates. A K~scc expression was modified using Cahn-Hiiliard non-uniform thermodynamic concepts to explain the change in cracking behavior.
