Maximum accumulation of ergosterol by Rhodotorula glutinis IIP-30 [4% (w/w) of the biomass] was at pH 4 and 28 to 30Β°C, wich glucose or sucrose as carbon source and (NH4)2SO4 as N-source. Molasses only gave 1% (w/w) ergosterol content, as did KNO3 or urea when used as sole N source.

It has long been known that ergosterol is the main sterol in yeast cells. Recent studies involving the use of gas-liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry have revealed the presence of other sterols in significant quantities in flaccharomyees cerevisiae (LONOLEY et al. 1968, HUNTER and ROSE 1972,

We have used a clinical magnetic resonance imager to search for the possible effects of a 1.5 T magnetic fields on the growth of the yeast Saccharomyes cerevisiae. Yeast samples were grown in nutrient broth contained in constant-temperature boxes, both in and out of the magnetic field of the imager.
