✦ Synopsis

Positron annihilation lifetime (PAL) measurements are reported on a series of chemically different cured epoxy resin systems. Analysis of PAL data yields indicates the effects of changes in the cure temperature and chemical structure on the average molecular free volume size. A comparison of PAL with conventional density measurements on samples exhibiting different values of the glass transition temperature (T 8) indicates the importance of microscopic voids on the physical properties of epoxy resins. This study gives new insights into the effects of structural changes in thermosets on their Tg behaviour.

Ah&met-The method of positron annihilation was used to study changes of free volume in polycarbonate. Annealing at 180Β°C and pressure 808 MPa causes significant changes of free volume (-23%) compared to nonannealed polycarbonate. The free volume compressibility was estimated to be -3.10-' MPa-'. The o-Ps lifetime 3 and the intensity I 3 of ST-AN copolymers and ST-MMA copolymers have been determined by using the positron annihilation technique. The average free volume hole radius R is estimated according to Tao's and Eldrup's model. The result shows that the average free volume hole size mai
