## Abstract Several substrates are available __in vivo__ for oxidation by the myocardium. Although substrate selection has been studied extensively in normoxic myocardium, relatively little is known about substrate preference very early during reperfusion after ischemia. ## Abstract The effect of ischemia and reperfusion on transverse relax ation (__T__~2~) of intracellular Na^+^ (Na^+^~i~) was measured with 5‐min time resolution in isolated rat hearts. Na~i~ __T__~2~ relaxation was biexponential with 28 Β± 7% fast (T~2f~)and 72 Β± 7% slow (__T__~2s~) decay. This rat
