Criegee (Karlsruhe, Germany) showed that aldozonides from styrene and substituted styrenes are cleaved to aldehyde and acid by some solvents, particularly rapidly by methanol. A diozonide isomerizes under acid catalysis to a compound that contains two peroxide groups and two acetal oxygen atoms.
