A considerable number of investigations have been published which have demonstrated that the anterior lobe of the hypophysis plays an important rBle in the physiology of the female reproductive system. Some of these studies have shown not only that the hypophysis is an important part of the mechanis

โฆ Synopsis
8im1)le cpitliclial cysts of the pars buccalis of tlie liypoph~-sis have bccii clescribccl by a number of worl;ers iii a variet? of aiiimals. They Iiare becii discussed primarily because of their ideiitificatioii with ciliated cells. Interest in the latter Iiws been coiiceimcl chiefly with the incidental persistence of epithelial remilants of 12atlikc's pouch or \.it11 the relatioiishil) bet\veeii this persistence and the growth of tumors of pathologic cliaracter (Frazier aiid Alpers, '34).
Soiiie difference of opiiiioii exists as l o tlie incideiice of ciliated epithelium i n the liypopliysis in a given species. Bryant ('16) claimed that these cells were to be found iii all freshly hardened liumaii hy~opliyses. Frazier 's ( '34) statement, followiiig a review of tlie litemture, that the frequency of such cells is apparently not great, and 12asninssen's ( '28) finding of ciliated epitlieliuiii ill oiily 2 of 300 ligophyses, after an esliaustive search of available liuinaii niaterial, fail to cow fivm this.
A study of other vertebrates has revealed equally variable figures. Lothringer (1886), Rogosvitsch (1889), Stieda (18'30), and Trautmanii ( '0'3) reported the existence of ciliated epitlielium in tlie liypopli~-ses of some rabbits. Trautmann ('Og), however, who studied a large variety of domestic animals as well, was unable to confirm Dostoiemsky 's (1886) finding of ciliated cells iii the Ii;c-popliyses of cattle. Vaiiderburgli ( '17) referred to the p i m e i m of some cilia in the pars buccalis of 133

A rapidly increasing mass of experimental evidence is pointing to a wider participation of the anterior hypophysis in the physiology of the organism. If we are to understand these phenomena, a more careful cytological analysis of the gland is necessary in situations where changes either in its activ
