We designed a bioartificial liver support system in which encapsulated multicellular spheroids of rat hepatocytes were utilized as a bioreactor in a hollow fiber cartridge. The spheroids, formed in a positively charged polystyrene dish that contained hormonally defined medium, were encapsulated into
