β¦ Synopsis
A BSTRA CT Short range measurements of the spectrum of the difference in broad band signals received by vertically separated microphones close to the surface of deep snow, together with transfer function data obtained from probe microphones at depth and on the surface are used to obtain values of porosities, flow resistivities and tortuosities. These porosities of interconnected air-filled pores in the ice matrix are shown to be consistent with those obtained by conventional non-acoustic means, both as a function of location and depth. It is suggested that acoustical techniques offer a relatively non-invasive way of characterising snow.
