✦ Synopsis

Abstract

Small monopole antennas like meander‐line antennas and normal‐mode helical antennas are used for handsets in personal communication systems. Because the radiation resistance of small monopole antennas is low, the impedance characteristics are a problem. In this article, we analyzed the relation of monopole antennas and their ground planes to current distribution, and we proposed methods to improve the impedance characteristics of small monopole antennas with low radiation resistance. The impedance characteristics of monopole antennas vary according to the feeding point and the width of the ground plane. Our analysis indicates that varying these impedance characteristics can be used to improve the impedance characteristics of small monopole antennas. The printed meander‐line monopole antenna and the stacked helix monopole antenna were used for experimentation. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ## Abstract In this article by using the Babinet's Equivalence Principle and self‐complementary structure, we present a novel printed monopole antenna for ultra‐wideband (UWB) applications. The proposed antenna consists of a ground plane and radiating patch with a slot and a sleeve structure, which
