Abstract
The preparation of 2 :4 : 6βtrinitrobenzoic acid by the oxidation of 2:4:6βtrinitrotoluene (TNT) in nitric acid solution with sodium chlorate, by the method of LΓΌttgen,^1^ has been rightly condemned by Clarke and Hartman^2^ on the grounds of control difficulty. However, it has been found that βwith suitable modification this method produces trinitrobenzoic acid with the minimum of trouble and in 85β90% yield (cf. 60β70% by chromic acid oxidation).

The pressure dependence of the reaction rate for the HCI-catalyzed photoreduction of 2,4,&trinitrobenzoic acid has been investigated by the time-resolved ESR technique. From kinetic analysis of the CIDEP spectrum and the pressure effects observed on it, possible mechanisms of the reaction are propos
