Nevertheless, on acid hydrolysis the compound gave herniarin. The formation of herniarin may be accounted for by the transformation of the liberated 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-trans-cinnamic acid (IV, Scheme 11) to the cis-form in presence of hydrogen ions. However, enzymatic hydrolysis did not give hernia
