An introduction to the Internet
Hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) is the modern day lingua franca by which computers all over the world can share text documents, images, audio files and interactive programs over the Internet. The original lingua franca, which emerged in the Levant, was a mixture of Italian, French, Greek, Arabic and Spanish, and it allowed travellers and merchants to communicate their ideas and conduct commerce in a common language. In 1989 a physicist, Tim Berners-Lee, proposed a common language for linking text documents to one another over the Internet. In 1992, CERN coined the term World Wide Web (WWW) for the exchange of information over the Internet and programs were added which allowed images to be viewed alongside the text.
