✦ Synopsis

The localization of the a subunit of the S-100 protein (S-100a) and p subunit (5-loop) was studied in the peripheral nervous system of the rat. In peripheral nerves, S-100a and S-1OOp were found in the cytoplasm of Schwann cells. Axons were positively stained in part by S-1 0 0 ~ and almost totally by S-loop. In the dorsal root ganglia, S-1OOa was found in satellite cells and their processes and in some neurons. S-1 OOp was found in more of the large neurons, but almost all of the small neurons were negative for S-I OOp. In the anterior horn cells, S-1 OOp staining was stronger than that of S-100a. In Schwann cells, both S-100a and S-loop were present on the rough endoplasrnic reticulum, free ribosomes, and nucleus, as seen by electron microscopy. The S-1OOa and S-loop in axons were associated with rnicrotubules and neurofilarnents. ## Abstract This article reviews the distribution of S100 proteins in the human peripheral nervous system. The expression of S100 by peripheral glial cells seems to be a distinctive fact of these cells, independently of their localization and their ability to myelinate or not. S100 proteins express

## Abstract S100 proteins are EF‐hand calcium‐binding protein highly preserved during evolution present in both neuronal and non‐neuronal tissues of the higher vertebrates. The use of antisera directed against conjugates of histamine and serotonin has revealed the locations of neurons labeling for these transmitters in the nervous system of barnacles. Photoreceptors label for histamine but not serotonin and also satisfy a number of other criteria indicating that histam

Urocortin was recently cloned from the rat midbrain. Urocortin is a member of the corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) peptide family and shows 45% sequence identity to CRF and 63% sequence identity to urotensin. It binds with a high affinity to CRF 1 and CRF 2 receptors, resulting in the stimulatio

Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is a potent immunosuppressant cytokine which downregulates MHC class I1 antigen expression and inflammatory cytokine production. In this study we localized mRNA for IL-10 in the rat peripheral nervous system (PNS) by nonradioactive in situ hybridization using a digoxygenin-lab
