IS support is crucial for the redesign of business processes, as the use of technology provides the groundwork to achieve sustained process improvements. An appropriate IS support alternative has to factor out the strategic and operational characteristics of the business process to be reengineered and supported. A necessary prerequisite will be to identify relevant IS alternatives for the support of BPR (i.e. (1) IS construction, (2) reengineering legacy IS, and (3) purchase of standard software packages) and the role of setting up an IS architecture and a repository of its elements.
