## Abstract The hydrolysis reactions of FeCl~3~ in 0.1 mM aqueous solutions were monitored by electrospray ionisation time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry (ESI‐ToF‐MS). In contrast to the other ionisation techniques, electrospray ionisation provides information on the composition of the elemental cores

✦ Synopsis
Hydrolysis
of carboxymethylcelluloses, made from softwood and hardwood pulps, gave mainly glucose and its mono-and di-substituted derivatives, together with considerable amounts of products derived from hemicellulose constituents. Each hydrolysate contained 2-and 3-0-carboxymethylxylose; mono-and di-substituted mannose derivatives were also detected after hydrolysis of the carboxymethylated softwood pulp. 2,3,6-Tri-0-carboxymethyl derivatives of glucose and mannose were detected in hydrolysates of samples of higher degrees of substitution, and 2,3-di-0-carboxymethylxylose was found only after hydrolysis of hardwoodderived samples. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. -Samples of CMC, prepared either from spruce sulfite or birch sulfate pulps, were commercial products. The degrees of substitution (d.s.) varied from 0.5 to 1. ## Abstract The hydrolysis reactions of AlCl~3~ in 0.1 M aqueous solutions at pH 3.27–4.20 were monitored by electrospray ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry (ESI‐ToF MS) as a function of time. The cationic and anionic ESI mass spectra of aluminum(III) solutions gave strong evidence of the
## Abstract We studied the hydrolysis of carboxymethylcellulose at 50 °C and pH 4.9 with a commercial preparation of cellulase (Celluclast) supplemented with a commercial β‐1,4‐glucosidase product (Novozym). The initial concentration of carboxymethylcellulose was varied between 2 and 12.5 kg m^−3^
