## Abstract ## BACKGROUND Desmoplastic melanoma is an uncommon variant of cutaneous melanoma that mimics soft tissue sarcoma both clinically and morphologically. An activating point mutation of the __BRAF__ oncogene has been identified in a high proportion of conventional cutaneous melanomas, but
