In measurements on multifilament superconductors, it was found that overall ac losses fall below the level of filament hysteresis losses at sufficiently high frequencies, due to field screening by filament coupling currents. At low frequencies, overall loss should also fall below the hysteresis loss

β¦ Synopsis
Hysteresis losses were measured on a series of fine filament Nb3Sn superconductors made by the internal-tin process. Hysteresis was measured as a function of filament diameter and interfilament separation using a vibrating sample magnetometer in transverse magnetic field. Losses were greater than expected from the critical state model that expresses loss as a function of filament diameter. Micrographs of the reacted wire cross-sections showed some interfilament bridging for all wires. This gave rise to effective filament diameters that were greater than actual diameters. The critical interfilament separation, above which the losses would be expected to follow the critical state model, was determined.

The magnetization of hollow superconducting filaments in a perpendicular applied field is calculated numerically using a mathematical model. With this model the hysteresis losses over a closed cycle of the applied field, as well as the instantaneous power dissipation in the filament, can be calculat
The paper presents the results of an experimental study of hysteresis losses in a transverse magnetic field by samples that represent small coils made of round wire of Nb-Ti alloy. The experimental results turned out to be considerably different from the values computed by the methods described in t
