✦ Synopsis

The FINUDA experiment will start data taking in 1997 to study hypernuclear physics by a large acceptance, high resolution magnetic spectrometer at DACNE, the Frascati Cfactory. Physics motivations and goals besides the expected performances are described.

1. THE FINUDA PHYSICS PROGRAM

The DAONE collider [1] is now under construction at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati of INFN. DA¢NE should run in 1997 at the center of mass energy of the ¢ meson with an initial luminosity of the order of L: = 1032 crn-2s -1 and a target designed luminosity one order of magnitude larger. The ¢ decays at rest into K+K -(49%), K°K~ (34%), pr (13%), 7r+~r-r ° (2.5%) and Y7 (1.3%). At the final luminosity 5000 ¢ per second will be provided, then DAcliNE can be considered a source of monochromatic, collinear, quantum-defined and tagged pairs of neutral and charged kaons.

FINUDA is essentially a Nucleax Physics experiment, the leading idea [3] to perform such an experiment at a collider was the possibility to stop the K-from the ~decay in a

FINUDA is an experiment aiming at high resolution hypernuclear spectroscopy. It employs different types of detectors enclosed inside a large superconducting solenoid. It will operate on the new, high luminosity (e + -e-) collider DA ~NE of the INFN Frascati National Laboratory. The solenoid operates
