✦ Synopsis

Abstract
Temporary occlusion of the hepatic artery and the portal vein during operations on the liver has been considered a safe procedure provided that the period of ischaemia is not extended beyond 20–30 minutes. Measurement of serum potassium in the portal and systemic circulation of dogs which were subjected to 20 minutes' hepatic ischaemia reveals a transient hyperkalaemia of sufficient degree to cause cardiotoxicity. It is concluded that even this short period of inflow occlusion to the liver is inadvisable.
