✦ Synopsis

We have investigated the photoactivating effect of hypericin on two cancer cell lines: PC-3, a prostatic adenocarcinoma non-responsive to androgen therapy and LNCaP, a lymphonodal metastasis of prostate carcinoma responsive to androgen therapy. The two cell lines are incubated for 24 h with hypericin at concentrations ranging from 0.001 to 0.3 mg/ml in cell culture medium. The cells are irradiated at 599 nm (fluences11 J/cm 2 ) using a dye laser pumped by an argon laser. Hypericin exerts phototoxic effects on both cell lines, while it does not produce toxic effects in the absence of irradiation. These results suggest that photodynamic therapy (PDT) with hypericin could be an alternative approach to the treatment of prostatic tumors, and could be beneficial in tumors that are non-responsive to androgen therapy.

We have examined the expression of the transmembrane glycoproteins CD44 in four human prostate tumor cell lines. Expression was examined at the protein level by flow cytometric analysis and Western blot, and at the mRNA level by reverse transcriptionpolymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). All four cell

BACKGROUND. Delta-aminolevulinic acid (ALA)-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) is currently being investigated for the treatment of prostate diseases. In this study, we evaluate 1) the in vitro production of protoporphyrin IX (PPIX) (the active photosensitizing agent of ALA-mediated PDT) by two dif

## BACKGROUND. The available human prostate cancer cell lines that are metastatic in athymic nude mice all have complex, highly aneuploid karyotypes. Other prostatic cells immortalized by transforming genes of SV40 or HPV and converted to tumorigenicity by additional genetic manipulation are not r
