Recent studies of treatment procedures for hyperactivity, with special focus on methylphenidate treatment, are reviewed from the perspective of three central questions: What is the effect of the treatment? What is the cost of the treatment? Why does the treatment work? The problems in answering the questions satisfactorily are presented.

"Hyperactivity" is a label applied to school-age children with great frequency. Depending upon the particular survey one reads, this label is affixed to between 4 and 20% of school age children (
