โฆ Synopsis
Hydrotropes Stig E Friberg
Previous views on hydrotropic solubilization as a matter of pair wise complexation between solubilizate and hydrotrope molecule have become modified during the past year. Three main discoveries concerning hydrotropes have been made: first, vapor pressures of solubilized molecules show a variation in vapor pressure more in line with nonspecific colloidal aggregates; second, the action of hydrotropes as 'coupling agents' has been shown to be due to simple disordering of long distance order aggregates; and third, hydrotropes have been demonstrated to be efficient and useful solubilizing agents in the preparation of vesicle solutions.

Hydrotropes are a class of amphiphilic molecules that cannot form well organized structures, such as micelles, in water but do increase the aqueous solubility of organic molecules. Often strong synergistic effects are observed when hydrotropes are added to aqueous surfactant or polymer solutions. Re
