2'-Deoxyxanthosine (dXao) has been prepared by treating 2'-deoxyguanosine (dGuo) with basic nitroprusside. Successful conversion appears to be favored by ionizing both dGuo (increasing its nucleophilicity) and dXao (protecting it from protolysis).
