✦ Synopsis

In 1980 the Human Development Study Group of the UNU-GPID Project held a meeting at the Fundaci6n Bariloche, Argentina. This book contains the substance of eleven papers presented at that meeting, subsequently revised in the light of the discussions that then took place. In that sense this book is a Collective Exploration. Various aspects of the concept of human development are considered, but perhaps the main shared feature among the different contributions is the use of holistic culture and value-laden concepts of human development as critical tools to describe and assess the human condition in the world in which we live and to outline alternatives to it.
