✦ Synopsis
A~tract--The influence of the nature and acid strength of two complexing agents, AIEtCI 2 and A1Et2C1, on the alternating copolymerization of styrene and methyl methacrylate in toluene has been investigated. With AIEtC12, a cationic homopolymerization of styrene, which cannot be totally suppressed, takes place concurrently with the copolymerization. In the case of AIEt2 CI, the agreement of the experimental results with the reaction scheme previously established in the case of ethylaluminium sesquichloride (EASC) is restricted to the range of low monomer concentrations. The alternating power of both complexing agents is lower than that of EASC. None of the various mechanisms proposed up to now in the literature seems to be general enough to apply to all the systems investigated.

The kinetics of the photoinitiated copolymerization of styrene and methyl methacrylate in the presence of ethylaluminium sesquichloride, in toluene solution, has been investigated by dilatometry. The data are in agreement with a statistical copolymerization mechanism involving styrene and complexed
