Abstract

Highโ€speed magic angle spinning at high magnetic field was used to obtain highโ€resolution solidโ€state ^23^Na NMR spectra of anhydrous Na~2~SO~3~ (__P__3, Z = 2). Observation of the spinning sidebands of the ^23^Na satellite (ยฑ 3/2 โ†” ยฑ 1/2) transitions allows the identification of the three crystallographic sites that could not be distinguished in the central transition region of the NMR spectrum. The ^23^Na sites in this salt were characterized by NMR for the first time and assigned to the crystallographic sites on the basis of a pointโ€charge model of the electric field gradient tensors at each site.
