✦ Synopsis
HIGH CARCINOGENIC ACTIVITY OF MONO-, DI-, A N D TRIMETHYL-BENZO ( a ) PYRENE
The carcinogenicity of 14 mono-, di-, and triniethylated benzo(a)pyrmes has beeti investigated. The majority exhibit highljJ pronounced sarcomagenic properties both with regard to the percentage of animals producing tumours, and to the latwcy period. Many of these honiologues are distinctly more active than the non-substituted benzo( a) p yvene .
Comparison of these experinierital results with the theoretical calculations of the electronic charge of the K-zone, together with the determination of the electronegativities of K-zone complexes, shows a JatiJ factory correlation. It can be predicted that the introductiori of more than three methylgroups into the molecule of benzo(a)pyrene will probably lead to the loss of carcinogenicity.
