Rattus blanfordi and R. cutchicus medius both have a chromosome complement of 2n = 36 and all chromosomes except the submetacentric Y of R. blanfordi are acrocentric. The apparently similar karyotypes of the two species, however, show variations in the nature and quantity of C-band-positive constitu

β¦ Synopsis
The distribution of constitutive heterochromatin in four species of birds viz. pigeon (Columba livia), duck (Nettapus coromandelianus), myna (Sturnus contra) and jungle babbler (Turdoides striatus) has been studied. Except in the pigeon, C-bands are localised mainly on the macro.chromosomes, whereas in the pigeon the micro-chromosomes are predominantly C-band positive. In the duck, heterochromatin is restricted to the centromeres of only 3 pairs of macrochromosomes, but in myna all the macros and only a few micros are C-band positive. In the jungle babbler, irrespective of the size, almost all the chromosomes are endowed with centromeric heterochr0matin. The W chromosome is entirely heterochromatic in all the species studied. Unlike mammals, where almost all the centromeres are C-band positive, in birds there is an obvious heterogeneity in the distribution of heterochromatin.

Variations in lateral asymmetry of constitutive heterochromatin were studied in 30 normal individuals with reference to the chromosomal regions 1q12, 9q12, 15p11, 16q12 and Yq12. Using DAPI staining after pretreatment with distamycin A we detected a familial deficiency of chromosome 16 heterochromatin. A distinct positively staining band, however, was seen after C-banding. Thus, by using these different heterochromatin staining methods, heterogeneity of the constitutive hete
Linear measurement of blocks of constitutive heterochromatin and the euchromatin portion 1q-h in three members of a family was used to study the dependence of the size of C blocks on the degree of chromosomal contraction. The results demonstrate that the size of heterochromatin portions decrease reg
